LG Display Set to Mass Produce World’s First Gaming OLED Panel Offering Switchable Refresh Rate and Resolution

LG Display, renowned for pioneering display technologies, announces the development of the world’s first Gaming OLED panel with a switchable refresh rate and resolution. Mass production of the 31.5-inch panel commences this month, marking a significant stride into the high-end gaming display market with innovative concept products.

This revolutionary Gaming OLED panel allows users to seamlessly switch between a high refresh rate (FHD∙480Hz) and a high-resolution mode (UHD∙240Hz) depending on their content preferences.

In high refresh rate mode, users can indulge in fast-paced games like first-person shooters (FPS) or racing genres, where speed and fluid screen transitions are paramount. Transitioning to high-resolution mode offers an immersive viewing experience for movies with intricate visual effects or high-definition 4K content. Unlike conventional panels with fixed resolutions, LG Display’s Gaming OLED panel offers unparalleled versatility for various applications.

The advanced solution powering this capability is Dynamic Frequency & Resolution (DFR), a proprietary technology developed independently by LG Display. With DFR, users can prioritize either refresh rate or resolution by adjusting the image processing speed, offering unprecedented flexibility. This technology debuts with LG Display’s 31.5-inch Gaming OLED panel.

Enhancing the immersive experience further, the Gaming OLED panel incorporates LG Display’s META Technology 2.0, leveraging Micro Lens Array (MLA) innovation to optimize light emission from organic materials, elevating image quality. Additionally, Thin Actuator Sound technology generates sound directly from the screen, eliminating the need for separate speakers and delivering more vivid audio.

LG Display intends to supply its new 31.5-inch Gaming OLED panel to leading global gaming brands, starting with LG Electronics. This move signifies the company’s aggressive expansion into the high-end gaming display market, with a comprehensive lineup of Gaming OLED panels ranging from 27 to 45 inches.

Unlike LCDs requiring backlighting, LG Display’s Gaming OLED panels are self-emissive, ensuring perfect blacks and lifelike image quality. With an ultra-high refresh rate of 480Hz and a response time of 0.03ms, they outperform any existing panel on the market.

Moreover, Gaming OLEDs emit half the amount of blue light compared to LCD screens, reducing the risk of eye fatigue during extended gaming sessions and eliminating flicker-associated headaches.
